I saw this fella in St. James Park last Saturday and luckily I had my camera with me. I've never seen one of these in my life and, frankly, wasn't entirely sure if they really existed as anything more than a song lyric.
So yes, I grew up in the country but not a countryside with black swans. I have seen nature outside of a zoo, I assure you!

We have black swans in Ottawa, Oliver... never heard of the Queen's swans they release in the Rideau River every year? There was big 'feather-ruffling' (ha... get it? feathers... swans... yeah) last year because they didn't release the swans in the summer of 2006 due to avian flu fears. Guess you didn't have to travel across an ocean to see some :P
Black Swana come from Australia. You see loads of them on the Swan River in Perth, Western Australia. You have "rellies " there remember?

Shucks! This was seriously the first time I can remember seeing such a beast. Ah well, some people go their whole lives without realizing the simple pun in "The Beatles" name, I guess it could be worse!
